Skin Cancers

Taking proper care of your skin is becoming more and more important, as the number of individuals being diagnosed with skin cancer each year continues to rise. In fact, researchers estimate that over 20% of the population in the United States will at some point in their life develop skin cancer, as over 1 million Americans are diagnosed each year.

There are actually three different types of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form, as it makes up nearly 90% of cancer cases in the U.S. It is also one of the most treatable forms if an individual detects the skin cancer symptoms of this specific type early on. Most often signs that skin cancer are of the basal cell carcinoma type is a tiny bump or protrusion on the skin in areas that are prone to a lot of sun, such as the head, arms, neck and face.

Squamous cell carcinoma is another of the three types of skin cancer, and like basal cell carcinoma it is highly treatable if the signs of skin cancer are detected early on. Skin cancer signs for squamous cell carcinoma include bumps or red, scaly patches located on the face. This form of skin cancer tends to limit itself to around the face, mouth, ears and lips, although it can in rare cases affect other parts of the body.

Malignant melanoma is the final of the three types of skin cancer, and it is the most deadly of the three. It accounts for over 75% of skin cancer deaths, thus it is important for individuals to notice the signs of skin cancer early and seek treatment immediately. Skin cancer symptoms for malignant melanoma include a mole that changes in shape, size or color, a mole that oozes or bleeds, and a mole that is swollen, tender or lumpy. In addition, individuals should periodically check their skin and note any new moles which have formed and could indicate a problem.

With skin cancer becoming more and more prevalent, it is important that individuals do their part to protect themselves. In addition to wearing the proper protection when out in the sun, individuals should also regularly check their body for any problem moles or rough skin patches which may indicate a more serious problem. By recognizing the signs of skin cancer when they're first present, you can seek treatment immediately and continue to live a healthy life.
